In the time of the European occupation of Australia, slavery was considered to be quite moral and legal. Perhaps the Aboriginals were lucky not to be shipped wholesale overseas to die of abuse in some foriegn country.

These days there is an argument: “The system where men worked as stockmen in return for food and clothes for their families was a good one. This should never have stopped, the aborigines didn't benefit from the change from working, to living on the dole”. The moral principle is to stop slavery! If the owners of the stock runs couldn't afford to pay wages, then they should not have been in business, or they should have reduced their profits. You cannot withhold honestly earned wages on the grounds that the workers may not spend their money wisely. To work as a slave, is to live with the loser mentality.
